Mill River’s Lincoln Pritchard named MVP in Twin State Classic

NASHUA, N.H – BFA-Fairfax’s Kyle Combs hit a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning and Vermont earned a split in the 2015 Twin State baseball classic at Holman Stadium on Saturday.

After New Hampshire took Game 1 with a 3-2 result, Combs’ hit delivered Vermont a 5-4 victory in the second game as the border rivals returned to the diamond after an 11-year absence. The showdown pitted seniors from Vermont’s four divisions against divisions three and four from the much larger Granite State.

Lincoln Pritchard (Mill River) was named the Vermont MVP and Hunter Kretchmar (Somersworth) picked up the honors for New Hampshire. Pritchard retired all nine hitters he faced on the mound in Game 2 and had three hits total in the two games. Kretchmar, a catcher, also had three singles in two games and threw out two runners on the base paths.

In the nightcap, Combs, who also picked up the win on the mound, singled in Sean Remillard (Rice) and Anthony Phillip (Rice) after New Hampshire scored a pair of unearned runs to take a 4-3 in the top half of the sixth The speedy Phillip was a catalyst for Vermont in both games with three hits, three steals and three runs.

In the opener, Pritchard had a two-out RBI hit and Joey Robertson (Essex) drove in Vermont’s other run on a groundout.

The series returns to Vermont next year.

Burlington Free Press Playoff Predictions

What to know: Top-seeded Mill River (15-1) took last year’s historic title, the program’s first, and proceeded to run away with the Marble Valley League this year to earn a home road back to the final. … The Minutemen could run into No. 4 Bellows Falls (11-5) for the third time this year in the semifinals — or it could easily end up being a championship rematch at that stage against surging Harwood, the fifth seed at 11-4. … Across the bracket, Lamoille (14-2) leads the way at No. 2 but it’s a group fraught with contenders: No. 3 Milton, on the rebound after a three-win season in 2014, and No. 6 Lake Region, with Division I-bound flamethrower Matt Messier topping the rotation.

Playdowns

No. 8 Enosburg over No. 9 Springfield

No. 4 Bellows Falls over No. 13 Mount Abraham

No. 5 Harwood over No. 12 U-32

No. 2 Lamoille over No. 15 Otter Valley

No. 7 Oxbow over No. 10 Lyndon

No. 3 Milton over No. 14 Vergennes

No. 6 Lake Region over No. 11 Fair Haven

Quarterfinals

No. 1 Mill River over Enosburg

Harwood over Bellows Falls

Lamoille over Oxbow

Milton over Lake Region

Semifinals

Mill River over Harwood

Milton over Lamoille

Championship

Mill River 3, Milton 2: After knocking out two fellow title contenders (Lake Region and Lamoille) just to get to the final, the Yellowjackets meet their match in Mill River, which reigns in D-II for the second straight year.
